Freja is a purpose built GRP monohull launched in 2002.

The vessel has dimensions of 12.0m by 3.6m and draft 1.2m providing a shallow drafted and stable working platform and can be transported by road.  The choice of main engines and specialist gearboxes provides the vessel with the ability to cruise comfortably and economically at up to 25 knots whilst also being able to run for extended periods at very low speed.  Low speed running is controlled by electronic trolling valves which allow the engines to run at normal operating speed whilst the propeller speed is reduced to the required level.  This gives the ability to control the vessel at speeds down to as low as 1 knot if required.

Freja has a single working deck, the layout of which is relatively conventional. The rear working area incorporates a transom gate and overhanging platform to allow easy access onto the vessel and for deployment and recovery of survey equipment.  Other deck equipment includes a dedicated variable speed side scan sonar winch, davit and custom built pivoting over-the-side mounts for the deployment of over side sensors.

Freja is fitted with an integrated 6.5kVa single phase diesel generator that runs from one of the main fuel tanks.  The electrical system incorporates an intelligent 3500W inverter / charger and UPS unit with separate isolation transformer and voltage smoother for protection and efficient running of the survey equipment.  All equipment and PC based systems are also protected by dedicated UPS systems mounted in the base of each equipment rack.

Safety equipment carried on board complies with the MCA code of practice for small work boats (SCV Code) and is supplemented by a full complement of immersion suits for all onboard.  Freja carries Category 2 certification under the SCV code allowing her to carry 6 persons up to 60 miles from a safe haven on a 24 hour basis.  An 8 man life raft with hydrostatic release and 406 MHz EPIRB are carried onboard.
